Chromium, a metallic element, has an atomic number of 24 and an atomic weight of 51,996. Chromium, one of the natural components of the earth's crust; It is one of the basic elements of metallurgy, chemistry and refractory industries. The only mineral from which chromium metal can be produced economically is chromite. The theoretical formula of chromite, which is shiny black and dark gray in color, is FeCr204. The most important area of use is ferrochrome production. Ferrochrome is one of the main raw materials of stainless steel. The chromoxide layer it creates covers the steel surface like a film and provides resistance to chemical corrosion. Since chromium is very hard and its melting point is 1857 °C, it is used to harden metals and to make armored vehicles. It is also used in the refractory and chemical industries. Chromium was first discovered in Anatolia in 1848 by Lawrence Smith near the Harmancık district of Bursa.
