CVK Madencilik Kalkım Lead-Zinc Operation is located approximately 3.5 km southeast of the town of Kalkım in the Yenice district of Çanakkale province. The licensed operating area, covering 1,609.14 hectares, includes underground mines, administrative buildings, a flotation plant and a tailings pond. The run-of-mine ore produced in the underground workings is processed at the flotation plant to produce lead and zinc concentrates, a significant portion of which is exported.
Following the completion of exploration activities in 2012 in the Kalkım license area, production of run-of-mine ore began and, in 2012–2013, a fully automated flotation plant with a daily feed capacity of 1,000 metric tons and a tailings pond were commissioned to enable processing of the produced run-of-mine ore.
All mechanized underground mines within the Kalkım license area are capable of producing 500,000 metric tons of run-of-mine ore per year. From the run-of-mine ore processed at the flotation plant with an annual feed capacity of 300,000 metric tons, approximately 30,000 metric tons per year of lead, zinc, copper and silver concentrates can be produced.
To support the production of run-of-mine ore feeding the Kalkım flotation plant, capacity-enhancing works were carried out and, in 2017, new licensed lead-zinc operations in the Çanakkale–Yenice and İzmir–Bayındır regions were transferred into operation. In 2019, a new exploration license for a lead-zinc site in the Balıkesir–İvrindi region was obtained through the MAPEG tender.
Production of run-of-mine ore was suspended in 2022 due to the existing tailings pond at the Kalkım flotation plant reaching capacity. An Environmental Impact Assessment (ÇED) application has been submitted for the construction of an additional tailings pond, and if a positive ÇED report is received, construction of the new pond will commence and be completed.
